Coach Hern is a 1989 graduate of Alhambra High School. He was a three-year starter on the Varsity Baseball team, garnering All-League First Team Honors as a junior, and was team captain of the 1989 DFAL Champion Bulldogs as a senior. The 1989 team went on to win the NCS 3A Inland Valley Championship, defeating Pittsburg and Monte Vista. Alhambra defeated Albany in the semi-final, before falling to Marin Catholic in the 3A final. The Bulldogs finished the year ranked #1 in the East Bay ahead of Antioch High. Coach Hern was also a two-year starter for the Varsity Football team and quarterbacked the 1988 squad to the DFAL Foothill Division Championship, Alhambra's first outright league championship in eleven years. He was selected to the All-League Team and was named team MVP. Coach Hern earned two more varsity letters as a point guard for the Bulldog basketball team. Coach Hern went on to attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland graduating in 1993 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He served in the Pacific Fleet aboard Guided Missile Cruiser U.S.S ANTIETAM and deployed to the Persian Gulf in 1996-97 in support of Operation Southern Watch. Coach Hern achieved the rank of Lieutenant and was Honorably Discharged in 1998. He returned to Martinez in 2000 with his wife Katherine to start a family. He has two children, Aaron and Abigail.
